The Crucifixion of Jesus

Beyond the Present Time
Resurrection Hope
The Lord Has Risen Indeed!

Luke 23:32-38

The Message
32 Two others, both criminals, were taken along with him for execution.
33 When they got to the place called Skull Hill, they crucified him, along with the criminals, one on his right, the other on his left.
34-35 Jesus prayed, “Father, forgive them; they don’t know what they’re doing.”
Dividing up his clothes, they threw dice for them. The people stood there staring at Jesus, and the ringleaders made faces, taunting, “He saved others. Let’s see him save himself! The Messiah of God—ha! The Chosen—ha!”
36-37 The soldiers also came up and poked fun at him, making a game of it. They toasted him with sour wine: “So you’re King of the Jews! Save yourself!”
38 Printed over him was a sign: this is the king of the Jews.

Reflect
Taunting, teasing, brutalizing, dehumanizing, these soldiers exemplified those who respond the demands of the common culture of their times. Are they different from us? You answer. When was the last time you heard others speak unkindly. When have you heard others criticize another person or even laugh at them? Jesus lived and died so that we could avoid the common culturally acceptable but unloving responses.

Pray
That you will speak and act in ways that will attract others to God and the Way. Pray that others will respond to the Gospel message of peace and right relationships among people.
