Can I Flee From God's Presence?

God Loves Us
God's Pervasive and Sustaining Love

God's Sustaining Love

Psalm 139:7-12 The Message

7-12 Is there anyplace I can go to avoid your Spirit?
to be out of your sight?
If I climb to the sky, you’re there!
If I go underground, you’re there!
If I flew on morning’s wings
    to the far western horizon,
You’d find me in a minute—
    you’re already there waiting!
Then I said to myself, “Oh, he even sees me in the dark!
At night I’m immersed in the light!”
It’s a fact: darkness isn’t dark to you;
night and day, darkness and light, they’re all the same to you.

For Reflection
The fact that God is everywhere is both comforting and disturbing. No matter where we are, physically or psychologically, God's comforting presence heals, Likewise, God knows our every thought and move.  The latter is a bit disturbing, We all have secrets we keep from others, but nothing we think, say or do is hidden from God.  Amazingly, God knows, and yet, abides.

As Barbara Brown Taylor points out, "Even when you cannot see where you are going and no one answers when you call, this is not sufficient proof that you are alone. There is a divine presence that transcends all your ideas about it, along with all your language for calling it to your aid, which is not above using darkness as the wrecking ball that brings all your false gods down— but whether you decide to trust the witness of those who have gone before you, or you decide to do whatever it takes to become a witness yourself, here is the testimony of faith: darkness is not dark to God; the night is as bright as the day."

Pray
Pray so that no matter what happens you keep on keepin' on with the confidence that at the end of this trial as at the end of all other trials God will make it right.  Pray to drive your darkness into the light of God's glory and grace.  Pray for patience and wait on the Lord.
